Sunday 7 November 2010

101107 ep. 16 November

A chilled session as winter knocks at the basement's door. Dubs by the dozen and low end miracles from foreign lands, interspersed with skewed beats of all shapes and forms, angular and linear. This session we chimed in to the sounds of Australia, Nepal, Congo, the American South and a few vibrations which could either be German or extraterrestrial. Ended with a live jam to the first scenes of George A. Romero's Dawn of the Dead - I forgot to take the needle off of Tangerine Dream though so it wasn't just me making a racket.

Last transmission of the '09-'10 season. Sad times but we ripped it up for one last time with *three* guests on the show! Namely Fabian Hummel aka Fshstk, Dora Ma and Tom Matcham aka Grammaticus. A splendid assortment of the realest electronic music around... some IDM, bit of hip hop, followed by a barrage of drum'n'bass and future garage. One of the funnest shows I've done all year! The racket creeps back into the speakers after exam limbo! This time joined by Tom Matcham aka Grammaticus on the decks spinning some dopey dubstep from the next century. From my end, hip hop and techno's lovechildren break the plates before descending into hazy waters with the inimitable Kassem Mosse and a spliffing version of Summertime Summertime Summertime Summertime Summertime :)

100425 ep. 12 Channeling the Spirit of Jazz, vol. 3

Last transmission of the term as exams peak their ugly heads through the calendar. A more chilled out channeling this time with a more mildly tempered look at open styles of jazz from the likes of Eric Dolphy (from 1964's Blue Note release "Out to Lunch!" featurng Freddie Hubbard on the trumpet; this track "Hat & Beard" refers to Thelonious Monk) as well as a legendary live collaboration between Thelonious Monk and Mr. "John Coltraaaane"! Yet another peak at Flying Lotus's new sounds and a Carl Craig affiliated track I've been meaning to play for a long time: Bug in the Bassbin by his Innerzone Orchestra.

100418 ep. 11 w/ Dora

Got back from the holidays with a bucket of new tunes, including Workshop Records's latest offering plus new discovery Gonjasufi, who's debut album "A Sufi and a Killer" was released last month on Warp records, with production credits to The Gaslamp Killer. Speaking of Warp, also included a preview of Flying Lotus's upcoming album "Cosmogramma" set to drop May 3rd.
Dora Ma took over during the second half, blowing us away with a full hour of heart scrambling drum, bass and subliminal cuts from the sweetest ethers of the underground.

100314 ep. 9 rocking this joint in an old school way

For this episode I was joined by Afonso Almeida (also known as Fonzy; not to be confused with The Fonz) who studies violin at Trinity College of Music here in London. We kicked it old school with a fine selection of contemporary classical music from the late 19th and 20th century. Including a movement from Bartók's banned ballet The Miraculous Mandarin and a special edit of Stravinsky's Rites of Spring, culled from 146 cuts from a dozen different recordings of the original piece. A statement in minimalism protesting against the overdose of remixes and 'edits' (dub edit, jungle edit...) flooding current electronic music. Some challenging pieces and some aural manifestations of beauty, all intoxicating.

100307 ep. 8 riding the electron wave

Like ep. 2, ep. 8 takes us on a trip through electron clouds and cerebral currents, letting the sound separate us from the vapid everyday. Playback only recorded the first hour but things kept rolling until after midnight with some serious minimal techno following the sublime Kassem Mosse tune from his last Workshop contribution and somehow followed by Messiaen's "Catalogue d'Oiseaux" and ending in a free-for-all jazz frenzy. Don't ask, it just happened!

100228 ep. 7 Channeling the Spirit of Jazz, vol. 2

Second instalment of the Channeling the Spirit of Jazz series with co-host Jérémie Coullon. Starts and ends under futurist inclinations while the rest of the show dusted off a few iconic figures, painting jazz under no rules. Also, a look at a bassist who blew me away at the Cafe Oto recently, Guillaume Viltard (pictured below), who's last album "Running Away" was released by http://unrevenu.free.fr/ last summer. Jérémie's contributions brought us the digital artistry of the Somnambulist Quintet and the fresher than fresh Electro Deluxe.

100214 ep. 6 with George!

It was a lot of fun compiling the tracks for this show as most of the bands on here I came across when I was around 14 (thanks epitonic.com for existing!) and getting more into guitar. In a sort of post punk math rock (very inventive pigeonholes there haha) vein... George (my ex-neighbour in Tizard haha) brought some genuine face melters to finish it off and as usual I stayed in the studio for 'after hours' sessions playing a few things you won't find on the playback ;) but anyway, you can listen to the rest again directly via http://www.icradio.com/replay/226472 (stream)

100124 ep. 3

Chilling with Jérémie in the studio... bit of a strange one this time around. Starts off with some lo-fi new wave, then break out the guitars (melt them, boil them) and some genuinely 'far out' avant garde axeage from legends Derek Bailey and Keiji Haino. Second half of the show shot straight to space and grooved back down to a close :) Listen back via http://www.icradio.com/replay/226303 (stream)
